Matchmaking seems to have been improvedhowever. When playing as clubs from outside the European elite, you don’t seem to be drawn to your PSGs or Real Madrids as often, though the occasional Ronaldo perve still pops up as Manchester United. Perhaps that says more about Manchester United’s Red Devils’ fall from the top than anything else, though.
Ultimate Team – FIFA’s playable fantasy football mode, and the virtual version to the European Super League – now allows you to build a star-studded team thanks to a more accommodating method of how its team chemistry system works. Players in the same league country no longer have to be adjacent to each to form a team in order to increase your score on chemistry, plus they don’t suddenly lose their football skills simply because they don’t have something in common with their teammates.
There are those who will appreciate the added liberty it provides when shopping in the transfer market, but it feels a bit like a large part of what made building the team interesting and exciting has been sucked out. Either way, FUT is still largely paid-to-win and reflects all the worst parts of football today. Also, the interface is as warm as a Rangers pub to someone wearing the Celtic scarf.
Career mode has undergone an overhaul in appearance to make it more in line with the other modes, but it plays largely identical to the previous. When you control the player, there are RPG-style points that you can earn depending on how you behave on and off the pitch in addition to the ability to play the role of coaches and players in real life rather than creating your own completely from scratch.
It’s not as simple as the constant attempts of career mode to make you play less football. EA had already added many training elements that were a bit like admin and now you can choose to watch the highlights of games, rather than the full 90 mins. When it comes to football it’s somewhat confusing.
FIFA may not be the best choice to show off the capabilities of your console, but there are some cool features that help to enhance that impression of realism just a little more in the sense of how goal net ripples, or the way that sliding tackles can cause the pitch to split over the duration that lasts for 90 mins.
EA is keen to trumpet the effects of its HyperMotion2 motion-capture technology. It makes the player’s movements appear more authentic. This year, it’s employed for women and men. While the physical differences may not as apparent as they are when playing with male players, it’s a further move to make women’s sports feel less like a token inclusion.
There’s still some way to go, however. Addition of Women’s Super League and France’s Division 1 Feminine takes the number of teams to 41 but they’re still not available to play in all modes including career mode, making FUT the most glaring omissions.
