If I lifted the Lombardi Trophy, and Madden nfl 21 coins told you the Chiefs didn’t score one offensive touchdown through the Super Bowl, would you think it? That is exactly how it performed in our newest Madden sim pitting the reigning champs against arguably the greatest group of all time (not to diminish what the ’72 Dolphins and ’07 Patriots accomplished), the 1985 Chicago Bears. The Monsters of the Midway of mike Ditka were known for his or her defense, a unit led by Hall of Famers Mike Singletary, Richard Dent and Dan Hampton. And wouldn’t you know it, that the Bears’ powerful defense gave the Chiefs fits, limiting cannon-armed Patrick Mahomes to the second-lowest passing output (a meager 148 metres through the atmosphere ) of his three-year career.
The Super Bowl MVP zinged a bullet in Tyreek Hill, that scampered into a pickup on before the two-minute warning. That pushed the Chiefs by booting a beauty with 37 ticks on the 28, for Harrison Butker, who broke a tie into easy range. The Bears had a chance to rebut remaining, but Chicago could only get two plays off before time ran out, after trimming their timeouts over the drive.
The Chiefs’ victory was fueled in large part with their dominance on special teams. While Dorian O’Daniel provided similar heroics from the fourth quarter, moving the other way for a touchdown after scooping up a fumble by return guy Ken Taylor stud rookie Mecole Hardman steered his internal Devin Hester. Both plays proved costly for the Bears, who given a mere 209 yards (148 passing, 61 rushing) in the losing effort.
Chicago’s Super Bowl defeat will long be remembered because of its opportunities. While Harrison Butker starred with two field goals his inaugural counterpart Kevin Butler needed a leg on his 51-yard attempt, which clanked off the vertical. Jim McMahon produced adequate counting stats (209 passing yards and a touchdown with the other 59 yards rushing) for the Bears but left things on the table with his end-zone select first-and-goal early in the second quarter.
Chicago wasted a performance from Walter Payton, who paced the Bears rushing yards. Sweetness parted the sea onto his touchdown gallop, knotting the score at seven 41 minutes into the first quarter. It seemed like we’ve got a barnburner on our palms, but obviously that was not the situation as the 59 minutes and change.
For the second straight sim we watched a defensive player get top billing with pass-rusher Chris Jones receiving Super Bowl MVP honors. You won’t have to wait another week of cheap Mut 21 coins to get our Madden flow because the Patriots and Buccaneers will be gutting it out on our airwaves Tuesday night at 8 PM ET.
