Longshot: Homecoming picks Madden 20 coins up where the last match left off, with Devin (J.R. Lemon) and Colt (Scott Porter) adapting to life after the NFL Draft. Devin fights to get a project as a fourth-string quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, while Colt is back home in Mathis, Texas, captured between his NFL aspirations along with a changing hometown that abruptly needs him more than ever.
This is really Colt’s story — that the former star receiver has a tremendously gratifying and psychological character arc, whereas Devin’s more rote NFL adventures feel like an afterthought.
Last year’s Longshot mode performed like a Telltale Games-style adventure name, with quick-time events and interactive dialog sequences that let you influence the outcome of the story. Homecoming is much more compact compared, as nearly all its gameplay segments consist of actual slices of NFL or even higher school football games. Those hoping for a more interactive adventure might be let down, but I personally didn’t overlook the dull mini-games from cheap Mut 20 coins the past year’s narrative, and enjoyed having the ability to kick back during cutscenes.
