I started playing with Runescape 15 decades ago after discovering it among the likes of Stick RPG and Motherload on Miniclip. During a game design degree I got back into old school rs gold game (mainly because everyone was dissing OSRS in favour of AAA games so that I had to shield it’s honor and rejoin). I started streaming OSRS alongside the amount and once I graduated I decided it is either’never or now’ took the plunge to go full time. That was 4 decades back and I haven’t looked back since – however it absolutely has had it’s fair share of barriers due to a lot of toxicity and echo chambers in the depths of the internet where some believe that women just game”to the wrong reasons”. It’s been a struggle but one worth the fight.
I personally always loved to draw and play video games and I knew I wanted to do anything. Then I found this university where I could research game art and realised I make a career out of it and could combine 2 of my passions. The course I had was very general and I’d concept art, environment art, char artwork… Both stylised and realistic. Only by looking all the different choices out I found out that I enjoyed making environments. By the end of the studies I had done 2 internships. I got work in Cambridge which sadly shut down in the beginning of the summer here for an indie business. Then I ended up here at Jagex!
I received into content creation from boredom. Sort of thought I would stick to streaming here and there with friends, now it’s turned into a career. I could not imagine doing anything else! I have made friends that were amazing, have learned so much more, and a great deal about myself. In terms of challenges/obstacles, I wouldn’t say a whole lot, but there are a couple of. I get told often that I am only successful because I am a lady, which normally comes out of a man who’s less powerful than me. That to.
I researched something Computer Science related and through this figured out that I wanted to work in games. Once I finished, I applied to all sorts of tasks: Game Design QA and translation and testing. Turns out, reading a great deal of fantasy books as a child and having a deep running love for English and puns is really quite a useful ability and that I got the job at Localisation as a Tester and Translator!
I stuck around more than I initially anticipated after 5.5 decades using Jagex! The Localisation Team has a gender balance that is good, so in my instant circles, I didn’t notice a lot of problems. During Uni, I remember a few awkward discussions though where I was the only girls to buy rs 3 gold that had to weigh in a some weird discussions and clear up some misconceptions!
